Plywood is the backbone of almost every wardrobe, kitchen, bed and TV unit. Choose the wrong grade and you will see swelling, delamination or termite damage within a few monsoons. Here is a plain-language guide to picking the right plywood for your home.
The four common plywood grades
MR (Moisture Resistant): bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin. It handles normal indoor humidity but not direct water. Good for bedroom wardrobes, TV units and dry-area furniture.
BWR (Boiling Water Resistant): phenolic-resin bonded, made to the IS 303 standard. A good all-round choice for kitchens, bathroom-adjacent cabinets and coastal or humid regions.
BWP (Boiling Water Proof): the highest grade for interior use, made to the IS 710 standard. It is built to survive long contact with water and is the safest choice under a sink, in modular kitchens and in outdoor-facing furniture.
Commercial plywood: the cheapest option. Fine for temporary work or hidden parts, but not recommended for furniture you want to last.
Which grade for which room?
- Modular kitchen (base cabinets): BWP
- Kitchen wall cabinets: BWR or BWP
- Wardrobes and beds: MR or BWR
- Bathroom vanities and utility areas: BWP
- Doors and shutters: BWR, or a block board / flush door suited to the location

Which thickness should you use?
For most home furniture, 18 mm is the standard for carcasses and shelves, 12 mm for backs and drawer bases that carry little load, and 6 mm for back panels. Long shelves that hold heavy items such as books need 18 mm with extra support.
How to check plywood quality before buying
- Look at the edge. Uniform, tightly bonded layers with no gaps or voids indicate better quality.
- Check for the ISI mark and the IS standard number printed on the sheet.
- Ask for the brand and batch details, and buy from an authorised dealer so the warranty is valid.
- Tap the sheet. A dull, hollow sound often means internal gaps.
- Check for a fresh, even surface without warping.
Why humid climates need extra care
Tamil Nadu's humidity and monsoon season put plywood under constant stress. Seal all cut edges, avoid placing furniture flush against damp walls, and use BWR or BWP wherever moisture is likely. Good-quality plywood also resists termites better, because the resin and treatment reduce what termites feed on.
